About Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings (or simply the Wings) are a professional ice hockey team. The Wings are based in Detroit. The Red Wings are one of the six original franchises in the NHL. The team now plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Detroit Cougars, founded in 1926, changed their name to the Detroit Tigers in 1930. Before becoming the Red Wings in 1932, the team played under the moniker Detroit Falcons for the following two seasons. After 52 years at Olympia Stadium, the Wings moved to Joe Louis Arena in 1979 and stayed there until 2017. As of the 2017–18 season, they played out of the Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings are one of the most successful teams in the NHL. The term "Hockeytown" has been used to describe the Detroit metropolitan region by fans and sportscasters alike since 1996. The Red Wings confirmed Steve Yzerman's return to the franchise on April 19, 2019. He was hired as general manager and executive vice president. Detroit's elimination from postseason contention on February 21, 2020, made them the first club to do so since Pittsburgh's in the 2003–04 season. As of 2023, the Detroit Red Wings have won the third-most Stanley Cups of any NHL organization. The team is only behind the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Established on September 25, 1926, the Detroit Red Wings were a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise for 98 seasons before the 2023–24 season. Little Caesars Arena hosted the Red Wings for their seventh season.  After the Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in April 2024, the Red Wings were knocked out of postseason contention for the eighth year in a row in a tiebreaker. The team's record for the season was 41-32-9.  Center Joe Snively inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Red Wings in July 2024. Snively, 28 years old in 2023–24, appeared in three games for the Washington Capitals. Using the 2024 preseason, the Detroit Red Wings have assessed their young players, especially Jonatan Berggren, who has shown great effect and seems prepared for a full-time NHL post. Coach Derek Lalonde has been experimenting with several line combinations to establish the ideal chemistry.  Simon Edvinsson and Moritz Seider lead the push on the team's defense, which has been a main focus. Though they are still working on consistency as they get ready for a demanding regular season, the Red Wings have displayed flashes of great performance.
