The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey club that calls the nation's capital home. The team is also known as the Caps. It is under the ownership of Ted Leonsis' Monumental Sports & Entertainment. The Caps compete in the NHL as a member of the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan Division.

The Washington franchise and the Kansas City Scouts were established in 1974 as an additional team. The Capitals were consistent postseason rivals for the following fourteen seasons because of a core of players like Mike Gartner, Rod Langway, Larry Murphy, and Scott Stevens.

By selecting upcoming franchise pillars like Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Braden Holtby, Leonsis has brought back the organization he bought in 1999.

The 2009–10 Capitals finished with the team's highest points in the regular season. As a result, they became the first team in franchise history to win the Presidents' Trophy. They repeated as champions for three titles in 2015–16 and 2016–17.

The Capitals have been to the Stanley Cup Finals twice, in 1998 and 2018, with the latter being a victory. They have also won 12 division crowns and three Presidents' Trophies.

A 2-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers in April 2024 gave the Capitals the Eastern Conference playoff berth. It was the first time in franchise history that the Washington Capitals were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the New York Rangers, winners of the President's Trophy. 

While veterans like Alex Ovechkin continue to drive the Washington Capitals, their preseason has focused on revitalizing their team with younger players. Underperforming last season, the squad has concentrated on strengthening their power play; early indications indicate improvement. 

Prospects like Ivan Miroshnichenko have injected new vitality and pushed for places on the regular-season team. Looking well in the preseason, Goaltender Darcy Kuemper has given hope for the defensive end. Aiming to recover from a dismal past season, the Capitals have a fresh emphasis on youth and quality.
