The theatre was built and opened to the general public on October 1, 1928, and after renovation, it was reopened on January 14, 2005. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1,645 patrons. AC Entertainment operates the venue. The architecture of the theatre was designed by Graven and Mayger based On the Spanish-Moorish style. The renovation cost of the theatre was $29.3 million. The theatre was registered as a National Historic Place on April 1, 1982. George A. Fuller constructed its structure. The theatre was the first building in Knoxville essential with the air-conditioning.

The theater has hosted many arts events and classic films for the public. It is residence to the Knoxville Opera and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
